Hindsutan Motors has come up with a new project of developing an Ambassador based hatchback, which will underpin the existing Ambassador platform and is expected to hit the showrooms in 2013. The Ambassador hatchback is expected to get some modern styling elements with a hint of the iconic design of the Ambassador. Hindustan Motors are planning big for their future by reviving the Ambassador brand with introduction of new products to their portfolio.
The manufacturer recently announced their plans of introducing a BS4 emission norms compliant diesel engine for the Ambassador in June this year. They also revealed the plan of introducing a sub 4-metre Ambassador, which will hit the roads by early next year and is also expected to boost sales for the company. The manufacturer has started the R&D (Research and Development) work for the hatchback and it is believed to feature a rich cabin, improved interiors and new age styling.
The hatchback could use the Ambassador brand or a new sub-brand altogether and it will be built in the Uttarpara plant in West Bengal. Hindustan Motors will be making some investments at the Uttarpara factory for upgrading the technology. Currently the plant has a capacity of 25,000 units a year and the company is utilizing around 10,000 units out of that. They will be using the additional capacity after they launch new products. Few years earlier, the company had a plan to revamp the styling of the Ambassador sedan but eventually they dropped the plan due to technological constraints.
