The Hero Leap is India’s first electric hybrid concept scooter, which was unveiled by Hero MotoCorp at the 2012 Auto Expo. The hybrid scooter concept was developed from scratch at their R&D centre in Gurgaon. It is a technologically advanced scooter equipped with new innovative features. The scooter runs on both petrol and electric power in order to provide maximum fuel efficiency. In terms of design, the Hero Leap looks way ahead of its time. Hero has treated the hybrid scooter with futuristic styling and following are its salient features –
- Three technology patents
- Nine design registrations
- Rechargeable battery management system
- Petrol based range extender
- Chain case doubles up as a swingarm for the rear suspension
- Wide centre compartment
- Storage tray and integrated luggage rack
- Adjustable seat
- Instrument cluster with LCD display
- Dual LED headlight with minimal power consumption
- Daylight Running Lamps
- Large diameter front wheel
- LED turn signals
As can be seen from the features list above, the Hero Leap is indeed a revolution for India’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. There is no confirmation from Hero MotoCorp on when this scooter will go into production but the company could take the first mover advantage as TVS is also planning a hybrid scooter (Qube). Hybrid scooters are expensive to make due to the technology but if our government offers good incentives and subsidies, we could soon see hybrid vehicles as an affordable alternative to fossil fuel burning automobiles.
