Hero Karizma sales all-time low, the XMR launched in August last year
The Hero Karizma, once a dominant player in the Indian motorcycle market, has seen a significant drop in sales, sparking concerns about its future. The 2024 sales data shows a continuous decline in demand, despite the brand’s efforts to relaunch with a new model in 2023.
The Legacy of Karizma
Launched in the early 2000s, the original Karizma quickly established itself as a popular choice for Indian bikers. Known for its stylish design, robust performance and technological edge, the bike earned a loyal following.
However, things took a turn when Hero MotoCorp parted ways with Honda, its former partner responsible for technological and design expertise. In 2014, Hero introduced a new version of the Karizma but the bike failed to live up to expectations. It was widely criticised and sales plummeted, forcing Hero to eventually pull it from the market.
The 2023 Relaunch
In 2023, Hero reintroduced the Karizma with a new design, competitive features and a reasonable price tag. The move aimed to tap into the brand’s nostalgic appeal while attracting modern riders. But despite the strong reputation of the Karizma name, the relaunch has struggled to gain momentum.
It is powered by a 210cc, liquid cooled, DOHC, 4-valve engine that produces 25.5 PS at 9250 RPM and 20.4 Nm torque at 7250 RPM. This engine is paired to a 6-speed gearbox with slip and assist clutch system.
Declining Sales in 2024
The sales figures for 2024 reflect this struggle. The Karizma sold 947 units in April but the numbers steadily declined in the following months: 663 units in May, 476 in June and 529 in July. By August, sales had dropped to 258 units and in September, they fell sharply to just 48 units. This consistent drop suggests a broader issue of waning interest in the motorcycle, with September’s figure marking a worrying low point.
The Road Ahead for Karizma
Hero MotoCorp is now faced with the challenge of reviving interest in the Karizma. The brand still holds a strong legacy among Indian bikers but the current model has not captured the attention of new buyers. Hero may need to rethink its strategy – whether through design changes, a more aggressive marketing push or performance enhancements to keep the Karizma relevant in today’s competitive market.
