With the new launches lined-up including a 125cc scooter, Hero aims for leadership in the 125cc scooter segment.
Hero MotoCorp is planning an aggressive attack on the Suzuki dominated 125cc scooter segment. The company has lined-up quite a few launches for this fiscal including a new 125cc scooter. The 125cc scooter could be the Hero Dare that was showcased at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. We were the first to report that the Hero Dare could be named as Hero Aava. However, Hero is yet to confirm this.
The 110cc Duet and Maestro and the 100cc Pleasure are doing quite well in the market, and now Hero has set its eyes on the 125cc scooter segment. The new 125cc scooter will be positioned as a young urban commuter offering a unisex profile and will be designed along the lines of Piaggio’s Vespa and Yamaha’s Fascino scooters.
Hero’s 125cc scooter strategy is simple and clear. The Honda Activa 125 didn’t make an impact as per the company’s original expectations. Other players in this segment are the Suzuki Access 125 and Piaggio Vespa. While the Access 125 sells in the range of 22,000-26,000 units a month, Suzuki’s retail network is limited to only the urban metros and some tier-II towns.
We all know, the Vespa comes at a premium. The absence of TVS in the 125cc scooter space is also an advantage to Hero but the company is planning to launch a 125cc scooter next year. The 125cc scooter segment hence becomes a simpler category to crack. So, considering Hero’s large dealership network and if it could price the new 125cc scooter aggressively, the world’s largest 2-wheeler manufacturer could do another success story like the Splendor.
