Harley-Davidson Issues Recall For 54,000 Bikes In The US

In two separate recalls over 54,000 motorcycles have been affected including the Street 500 and 750 models but are restricted to the US market.

The defective master cylinder could lead to the clutch losing its ability to work completely

In two separate campaigns, Harley-Davidson has issued a recall for a total of 54,000 units of motorcycles in the US as per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report. The largest of the two recalls affect 45,901 motorcycles that are said to have faulty clutch master cylinders. As per the documents submitted by the manufacturer to the NHTSA, a chemical reaction inside of the sealed clutch system creates gas bubbles that may cause loss of clutch lift. This may lead to the clutch losing its ability to work completely, especially after long hours after being parked.

If this happens, the bike can move unexpectedly when the rider puts the transmission in gear, the report states further. At present, there have been 313 warranty claims, 31 customer complaints, 27 incidents or crashes and 4 minor injuries that can be linked to the faulty clutch master cylinder issue. In a bid to fix the problem, Harley-Davidson will flush the system and rebuild the master cylinder on the affected models. The motorcycles with the defective master cylinder are as follows –

* 2014 CVO Road King
* 2014-2015 Electra Glide Ultra Classic, Ultra Classic – Twin Cooled, Ultra Limited, Police Electra Glide, Street Glide, Street Glide Special, and CVO Street Glide
* 2015 Electra Glide Ultra Classic Low, Ultra Limited Low, Ultra Classic Low – Twin Cooled, Road Glide Special, and Road Glide.

For the second and smaller campaign, Harley-Davidson has issued a recall for 8904 examples of the 2015 XG500 and XG750 motorcycles (Street 500 and Street 750 in India) that are said to have missed out on the rear reflector assembly at the time of manufacturing, reducing the visibility to other drivers and increasing the risk of a crash. Therefore, these bikes don’t meet the American country’s federal guidelines and are being recalled to have the piece installed. In either of the recalls, Harley will be replacing the parts free of charge and has already commenced contacting customers and bringing in the affected models.
