General Motors is considering the launch of the Chevrolet Beat Electric in India. The American automaker feels there is scope to sell decent number of Beat Electric Vehicles in the country, as fuel prices rise to an all time high. However what is stopping GM from launching the Beat EV is the inconsistent Government policy on the auto sector. The American automaker is ready to launch the Chevrolet Beat Electric but is waiting for the Government’s announcement on Electric Vehicle norms and is hoping for lower duty on such cars. GM feels there is poor infrastructure for electric vehicles in India and wants the Government to improve the availability of charging points for these environment friendly cars.
The Chevrolet Beat Electric has been showcased in India on multiple occasions. Earlier GM was working closely with REVA to develop an electric vehicle but Mahindra’s takeover of the Bangalore based company resulted in GM breaking the tie-up. GM then developed its own electric motors in collaboration with Pan-Asia Technical Automotive Centre and showcased the Beat Electric on multiple occasions. The Chevrolet Beat Electric uses a 60 BHP electric motor to offer a 100 km range. For the U.S. market, a more powerful 114 BHP motor will be used. If launched, the Beat Electric will compete with the REVA NXR, which has been confirmed by Mahindra for a launch in the last quarter of 2012. The REVA NXR has a top speed of 80 km/h and a range of about 100 kms. Prices are expected to be start around Rs. 4.5 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
