Force Gurkha Automatic Variant Under Consideration

2022 Force Gurkha

Force Gurkha likely to get a 7-speed torque converter automatic transmission

The Force Gurkha is set to receive an automatic gearbox. Force Motors aims to expand the appeal of its SUV, which recently underwent a significant refresh. Currently priced from Rs. 16.75 lakhs (ex-showroom), the updated Gurkha is available in both 3-door and 5-door versions, featuring a more powerful 140 HP diesel engine and an array of new features.

Despite its enhancements, the Gurkha’s appeal has been somewhat limited by the absence of a more affordable 4×2 variant and its exclusive 5-speed manual gearbox. These factors have positioned the Gurkha as a niche vehicle, less attractive to urban buyers. This is particularly noticeable when compared to its rivals, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Mahindra Thar, both of which offer automatic versions. The Thar further broadens its market reach with a 4×2 variant and a smaller diesel engine option.

Force Motors is evaluating an automatic transmission sourced from the Japanese company JATCO (Japan Automatic Transmission Company), which is known for supplying CVT gearboxes for the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger. JATCO manufactures a variety of transmissions, including CVTs for hybrid vehicles and torque converter automatics ranging from 4- to 9-speed units for various vehicle configurations.

For the Gurkha, a 7-speed torque converter unit is under consideration. This transmission is expected to enhance the vehicle’s bottom-end torque, complementing its 4WD capability. The introduction of the automatic gearbox is projected to increase the Gurkha’s price by approximately Rs. 1 lakh. Consequently, the 3-door Gurkha AT is anticipated to be priced around Rs. 18 lakhs, while the 5-door version is expected to cost approximately Rs. 19 lakhs (ex-showroom).

When compared to the Mahindra Thar diesel 4×4 automatic variants, the Gurkha AT in its 3-door configuration may carry a slightly higher price tag. It remains to be seen whether this will translate into increased sales for Force Motors. To broaden its customer base further, the company has initiated the development of a Gurkha 4×2 variant to compete directly with the Thar RWD.
