One of the most striking car of the year, the 2014 Maserati Quattroporto is all set to make its grand debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto show in few weeks from now. When the first – generation Quattroporto which means “Four doors” in the Italian language was launched in 1963, it was the fastest such car in the market and it became the perfect long distance for a jet set bothered by sky rocketing fuel prices nor the speed limits. The introduction of the Sixth generation Quattroporte stands to be the grand event int the exotic car universe when it makes its debut at Detroit.
Larger than the outgoing model and with graceful swoopy character lines trying its best to mask the XXL proportions of this massive yet gorgeous four-door luxury sedan. The front side recalls the Gran Turismo range is highlighted by Xenon lights with a menacing LED signature. All the lines flow forward and encompass the grille, which proudly displays the Neptune’s trident.
Two engine options have been announced, a turbocharged V6 and turbo V8, both engines will be built by Ferrari at its Maranello facility. As expected the smaller of the entry level and smaller of the two V6 will be a 3.0-litre Twin turbo direct injection engine which is based on the Chrysler’s Pentastar engine, the enhanced mill will be able to deliver 404 BHP at 5500 rpm and 550 Nm of torque from 1750 RPM. The engine is mated with and eight speed ZF automatic transmission features not only Paddle shifters , but also a central shifter that operates as it suppose to: Pull back to upshift, push forward to downshift.
The new 3.8 V-8 twin-turbocharged and direct injected V8 will deliver 523 BHP at 6500 rpm and 650 NM of torque from 2000 rpm-710 NM with its overboost function. The new V-8 model will feature a rear wheel drive configuration. The rear wheel will get 100 percent of torque in the normal drive but as much as 50 percent will go the front wheels when needed. The Quattroporte will also feature Maserati’s new Skyhook suspension system , along with adjustable dampers and speed-sensitive hydraulic steering. The wheelbase also has been stretched by 107mm, with a focus of improved legroom.
The traditional handcrafted detailing continues in now more spacious Quattroporte’s cabin featuring both 4 seater and 5-seater layout options. Cabin luxury leaps forward technically too, with features like Maserati touch screen, adjustable paddles, back up camera, optional 15 speakers Bowers and Wilkins audio system and WiFi and smart phone connectivity.
The Quattroporte is expected to compete directly with the likes of Porsche Panamera Turbo S and Audi S8. But this Italian Stallion isn’t just about performance, its about glamour too. In the other words the Maserati Quattroporte will also have to hold its ground against the ultra-fast Continental Flying Spur, the stately Rolls-Royce Ghost and the handsome Aston Martin Rapid. Compared to these three competitors, the Quattroporte is the least expensive offering and also offers the fine combination of power, luxury and contemporary style.
