Fiat has recently introduced the new 1.6-litre Multijet 2 diesel engine in a new state of tune for the Fiat 500L. The 1.6-litre Fiat MultiJet 2 unit gets an improved figure of maximum torque of 320 Nm, which is 30 Nm more than the 290 Nm torque of the previous engine. The maximum power output remains the same at 105 BHP. The new 1.6-litre Multijet 2 diesel engine gives the Fiat 500L a 0 – 100 km/hr time of 11.3 seconds, while the top speed is 181 km/hr. The claimed mileage is 22.22 km/l.
Fiat will introduce the 1.6-litre Multijet diesel engine in the rest of its line-up in the near future. The company will introduce this motor in India with the next generation Linea, which is expected to be launched next year. The new Fiat Multijet 2 diesel engine will also bear the responsibility of powering India spec Jeep products. The 1.6-litre Multijet 2 turbo diesel engine will power the B-segment and C-segment Jeep SUVs. Currently, Fiat will introduce the Jeep brand in India with the launch of the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler SUVs taking the CBU route.
The SUVs featuring the new 1.6-litre Multijet 2 diesel engines are expected to hit the Indian shores in 2014. Coming to the Fiat 500L, the car will be offered with a 4-cylinder 1.6-litre diesel engine with electronically controlled Common Rail MultiJet II direct injection with fixed geometry turbocharger and intercooler producing 105 BHP of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox transmitting the power to the front wheels. The power output is the same as Volkswagen’s 1.6-litre TDI unit, but the torque output of VW’s motor is just 250 Nm, which pales in comparison to Fiat 1.6-litre engine’s higher turning force.
