Ferrari SF90 Spider Revealed, 986 HP Stradale Gets Drop-Top Sibling

The car has not lost any performance in comparison with its coupe sibling

Ferrari has revealed its new SF90 Spider, the drop-top variant of the 986 HP SF90 Stradale and the firm’s first plug-in hybrid convertible.

Revealed during a special online event, the SF90 Spider has the same powertrain as the Stradale. Thus, the 3990cc twin-turbo V8 that puts out 769 HP works with three electric motors that produce 217 HP combined, to produce a total power output of 986 HP.

Maximum torque of the all-wheel-drive supercar is rated at 900 Nm combined and the engine comes mated to an 8-speed DCT.

Such power and torque figures give the car the right to do the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 2.5 seconds, hit 200 km/hr in 7 seconds and top out at 340 km/hr.

These numbers are similar to the fixed roof Stradale despite the Ferrari SF90 Spider weighing 100 kg more at 1670 kg (dry), due to chassis reinforcements and the convertible roof mechanism.

But Ferrari says the retractable hardtop is 40 kg lighter than a conventional unit of its type thanks to its aluminium construction. It can open or close in 14 seconds and comes with an adjustable electric rear window should one wish to hear more of the engine when the top is up.

Inside, the car looks identical to its coupe sibling. The 16-inch digital instrument cluster, heads-up display, steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls, among various other features are offered here too.

Nonetheless, being a convertible, Ferrari has had to lower the roof by 20 mm, make the A-pillar thinner, provide more rake to the windscreen and shift the cockpit forwards by a bit.

People who want more carbon fibre on the SF90 Spider can choose the optional Assetto Fiorano pack which reduces weight by 21 kg by adding more carbon fibre and titanium.

It also gets customers a set of Multimatic dampers (optimised for track use), Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and the option to spec a two-tone livery.

As with every new Ferrari, the SF90 Spider comes with an extended 7-year maintenance programme. Cost of the car will command a 10 percent premium over the Stradale and comes in at £415,000 (Rs. 4 crores).
