Mahindra is preparing to launch a new compact SUV to rival Tata Punch & Hyundai Exter
The new Mahindra compact SUV has been spotted testing for the first time in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, near the new Mahindra test track. At this initial stage of testing, the prototype appears raw with dummy headlights and tail lights and it is completely camouflaged. Based on Mahindra’s use of such lights and the similarity in temporary number sequences for their test mules, it is likely that the vehicle belongs to Mahindra.
In terms of size, the prototype doesn’t appear as large as the Mahindra XUV300 or as small as a hatchback. This suggests that it will be positioned below the XUV300 as a compact SUV to compete with the Tata Punch and the upcoming Hyundai Exter.
The new product from Mahindra might replace the ageing KUV100, although it is expected to have a different name. While there have been no recent trademark filings by the carmaker, it is possible that they will name it the Mahindra XUV100.
The front profile of the prototype seems to be inspired by the new electric SUV concepts showcased by Mahindra in the UK last year. However, this particular prototype runs on an internal combustion engine (ICE), as indicated by the “E20 Fuel” tag on the rear windshield.
From the rear, the car appears bulky with a large bumper featuring integrated reflectors and a prominent number plate housing. It also has a thick strip running across the width of the tailgate, which may serve as a design element or house the tail lights. Additionally, there is a roof-mounted spoiler with brake lights.
It is hoped that Mahindra will offer a spacious interior with modern design elements and new features to compete with rivals, particularly Hyundai.
Under the hood, it is expected that the new compact SUV will feature a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine. Higher trim levels might offer a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine as well.
The new Mahindra compact SUV is anticipated to be available on the roads by the end of 2024.
