Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that India entry of his firm’s EVs will happen “next year for sure” on Twitter.
Elon’s tweet was in reply to Tesla Club India putting out a post on the microblogging site stating that news or any progress about Tesla’s India entry is welcome.
With the government(s) bringing in schemes and incentives for adoption of electric vehicles in India, the timing cannot be more right for the famous car brand to come to the country’s shores.
Also, this development comes close on the heels of a report about the firm having talks with the Karnataka government to set up a research centre in Bengaluru.
With only a handful number of electric cars that have reasonable range to be able to appeal to buyers on sale in India at the moment, there is huge potential in the segment that is yet to be tapped.
However, there are many things that will not make Tesla EV India entry a breeze. For example, the lack of EV charging infrastructure and most importantly the pricing factor.
Since battery and modules are not cheap to make and source (which is why Tesla is looking at reducing the cost of battery packs to make an “affordable” model), even the firm’s smallest vehicle will not be what Indians would reckon affordable. Rather, it is expected to sit at the premium end of the pricing scale.
One other thing that we do not know is if the carmaker will bring all of its models here or stick to only its base offerings. But, the launch will clear matters up for sure.
However, no EV firm that knows that the Indian EV market has the potential to touch Rs. 50,000 crores by 2025 will sit idly and neither Tesla nor Musk in particular shall let the opportunity pass.
