The billionaire-founder promises to not file lawsuits against those who want to use their technology in good faith.
Elon Musk made news by announcing that he had released all the electric car maker’s patents as an effort to fight against climate change. In a blog post, the billionaire promised that the company will not initiate any patent lawsuits against anyone who wants to use their technology for the greater good.
Musk said that Tesla Motors’ main aim is to create sustainable transport. But for that, it is difficult to build electric cars fast enough to address the carbon crisis. By releasing the patents, other smaller companies can benefit from their technology and compete against the gasoline powered cars.
Musk was skeptical of patents as it only helped giant corporations and lawyers rather than inventors. He felt compelled to file patents for Tesla to prevent rival car companies from stealing their technology. The real reason to create electric cars was to fight against climate change and by patenting, it is a hypocrisy.
Musk says that the real competition will not be these non-Tesla companies manufacturing electric cars, but against the gasoline powered cars. This open-source philosophy will strengthen Tesla’s position and will attract talented engineers.
