Ducati DesertX Discovery Sits Between Standard DesertX & DesertX Rally
Ducati has launched the Discovery Variant of the DesertX in India, priced at Rs. 21.8 lakhs (ex-showroom). This variant is Rs. 3.45 lakh (ex-showroom) more expensive than the standard DesertX. Let’s take a look at the shiny version of the DesertX.
What’s New On The Discovery?
The Ducati DesertX is a variant with shinier design details, including added aluminium panniers, a centre stand, and engine guards as standard. It slots between the standard DesertX and DesertX Rally. To differentiate it from the standard DesertX, it has a new livery.
Standard & Optional Accessories
In terms of functionality, the DesertX Discovery is based on the standard DesertX which is competent. However, the Discovery variants add accessories such as heated grips, and large touring windscreen as standard. The Discovery Variant also adds a bull bar and bash plate to give more protection to the DesertX Discovery.
The livery is a mix of red, black and white making it more special as compared to the standard DesertX. The graphics also have adhesive to protect the livery from rock chips and scratches. In a way, it doubles as a minor form of a Paint Protection Film.
Engine
The DesertX Discovery variant is powered by a 937cc Testaretta L-Twin engine, the same as the standard and rally DesertX. It produces 110 HP and 92 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed transmission with a quickshifter. The DesertX comes with a 21 Litre Fuel Tank capacity and an optional Auxiliary Fuel Tank capacity of 8 Litres is also available.
Ducati revealed an 890cc V-Twin engine to replace the older Testaretta engines. They have already put the new V-Twin in the V2 Streetfighter, Panigale and Multistrada. However, it remains to be seen when the Italian brand puts this engine in the DesertX.
Pricing & Market Positioning
The DesertX Discovery is priced at Rs. 21.78 lakhz (ex-showroom). At that price point, it sits between the standard DesertX, available at Rs. 18.33 lakhs (ex-showroom) and DesertX Rally, available at Rs. 23.7 lakhs (ex-showroom). It competes with the likes of Honda Africa Twin and Triumph Tiger 900.
Outlook
The bookings for the DesertX Discovery have already begun. It seems to be the best compromise for someone who knows that the gadgets of the DesertX Rally may be too much to use on the roads and wants an upgrade over the standard DesertX. The DesertX makes perfect sense in that case, but it would be great to see the DesertX at a more affordable price.
