Toyota announced that the Corolla sedan is the world’s best selling model in 2013. The Japanese manufacturer sold over 1.22 million units of the Corolla family the world over. The claim comes according to company’s internal data based on individual vehicle sales reporting from its distributors. The announcement refutes earlier claims that the Ford Focus is the world’s best selling car in the world with 1.1 million units sold globally.
Research firm Polk’s new registration data, which covers around 96 percent of all new vehicle registrations in the world, also confirmed Toyota’s claims, with the company selling 1.098 million units according to their analysis. Toyota sells the Corolla in over 150 markets globally under a number of nameplates which include Corolla Axio, Corolla Altis, Corolla EX, Corolla Fielder and Corolla Rumion and is sold in 4-door sedan and 5-door wagon body styles.
Globally Toyota is competing with auto giants like Volkswagen and General Motors who are also striving hard to gain world dominance. Toyota has managed to outsell all its competitors when it comes to overall yearly sales, thereby remaining the most popular automaker of last year. One thing common between all three manufacturers is recalls, as the top three have called back a load of cars for various issues.
Launched in 1966, Toyota has sold over 40.72 million units till February 2015 of the Corolla globally. The eleventh generation Corolla made its debut last year in the US market and sold over 3 lakh units of the model in 2013 with a 4 percent year on year increase in sales. Toyota also had a reasonably good sales year in 2013 with a registered growth of 2.4 percent. The company sold 9.98 million units sold worldwide last year, and is looking forward to achieve a sales target of 10 million units in 2014.
The all new Toyota Corolla will be making its Indian launch next month. Showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo earlier this year, the sedan is powered by a 1.8-litre VVT-i, 4-cylinder petrol and a 1.4-litre D4-D diesel engine. The new model offers more legroom at the front and rear along with improved build quality and an array of new features. On the styling front too, the new Corolla is miles apart from the older model with more powerful lines and a less conservative design. Bookings have already commenced for the Corolla with an advance payment of Rs. 50,000/- across dealerships.
