The new Datsun GO advert takes a dig at all age old Maruti Suzuki hatchbacks Alto and Wagon R with the GO emerging as a much more appealing vehicle in comparison.
They say ‘If you can’t be them, join them’; but, where’s the fun in that right? So when Datsun was up for its next ad campaign, Nissan decided it’s time they made amends to the adage and came up with ‘If you can’t beat them, mock them’ instead. The new TVC advert released for the Datsun GO takes a dig at Maruti Suzuki and its range of entry-level offerings including the Alto, Alto K10 and the Wagon R, while glorifying the features of the Datsun GO in comparison.
The TVC features actor Ayushmann Khurrana essaying the role of a Datsun GO owner, while Morgan Freeman’s 7th disciple Alok Nath plays a variety of roles as different Maruti car owners. The ad not only mocks Maruti Suzuki but also cleverly associates the Datsun brand with a younger and aspirational target audience. A quirky and rather witty way to put forth the idea, Datsun has managed to hit the sweet spot with the entire concept. Another thing we noticed is the fact that Nissan silently acknowledges the overwhelming number of Maruti vehicles we have on our roads. So if someone thought the ad wasn’t in good taste for Maruti Suzuki and its fans, you should think again.
Coming to the Datsun GO, the hatchback was launched earlier this year and competes against the Maruti Alto 800, Alto K10 and the Hyundai Eon in the segment. The GO gets the biggest engine in its class and is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol unit producing 67 HP of power. In addition, the hatchback comes with a boot capacity of 265-litres and claimed fuel efficiency figure of 20.63 km/l which are showcased as its USPs. The GO comes packed with features such as follow-me-home headlamps, mobile docking station with amplifier, AC, speed sensitive power steering, front power windows available on the top-end variant. Prices for the GO start at Rs. 3.12 lakhs, going up to Rs. 3.79 lakhs for the top-end variant.
Check out the TVC advert below and let us know what you think about Nissan’s innovative strategy. We are certain, even Maruti has seen the ad by now and hopefully are preparing for a spectacular comeback. This rivalry might just turn entertaining for a lot of us.
