Groupe PSA has begun production of the Citroen C5 Aircross SUV in India and the same was shared by an executive of PCA Motors India recently.
To be launched next year, the Citroen C5 Aircross production will take place at its plant situated in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. It goes without saying that the proceedings were supposed to take place sooner, but pandemic put an abrupt halt to it.
Although we have spotted the C5 Aircross testing in India, the first few units that are assembled at the plant might also be used for the purposes of testing.
Back in April, we reported that the C5 Aircross will come with a 2.0-litre diesel engine in India, despite the initial plan being to launch it with a 1.5-litre diesel. The 2.0-litre diesel will produce in the 180 HP range and will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Features to be offered on the SUV include six airbags, electronic parking brake, dual-zone climate control, hands-free tailgate, panoramic sunroof, powered driver seat, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment, 12.3-inch instrument cluster, among others.
So, it will not be cheap, but the thinking might be that positioning its first car that is sold on Indian soil as a premium product will give Citroen a good start in terms of brand image, thereby allowing it to introduce affordable products later.
The SUV was supposed to be launched this year, but due to you know what, it has now been pushed to the first quarter of 2021. Citroen is also coming up with a compact SUV that is touted to have localisation levels of over 90 percent.
