Chery’s entry into the Indian market could be through a partnership with Tata Motors.
Chinese carmaker Chery International is studying the feasibility of entering India probably with a partnership with Tata Motors or even without them. The company is yet to decide on this front.
Chery is a Chinese automobile manufacturer with a history of 20 years. The company has brands like Arrizo, Fulwin2, Tiggo, and QQ in its portfolio. Chery already has a joint venture with Tata’s Jaguar-Land Rover unit in China and may use that partnership or some other options to drive into the Indian market.
Chinese carmakers like Shanghai Automotive and Beiqi Foton have firmed up their India plans, while Changan and Great Wall have had various rounds of discussions with the Indian authorities. Back in 2014, a Chinese daily had reported that Chery was in talks with Tata to sell the platforms of its QQ, A1 and M1 compact sedans to raise some capital and ease off its debts.
However, those plans took a back seat as Tata had commenced talks with Volkswagen and the PSA Group of France for potential partnerships. Unfortunately, the talks with the European automakers have also not materialised.
