CCPA Directs E-commerce Giants To Remove Car Seatbelt Alarm Disabling Clips

In a significant move to uphold consumer rights and ensure passenger safety, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has instructed leading online retailers like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, Shopclues and Meesho to permanently remove all car seatbelt alarm stopper clips from their platforms.

These alarm stopper clips have come under scrutiny for compromising the safety of passengers by disabling the seatbelt reminder alarm. Some sellers have been marketing these clips disguised as other items such as bottle openers or cigarette lighters.

The consumer protection body has taken measures against the five e-commerce companies for their violation of consumer rights and engagement in unfair trade practices, as outlined in the Consumer Protection Act of 2019.

In response to the directive, online retailers have promptly taken down seatbelt alarm stopper clips and associated products from their platforms. A total of 13,118 products have been delisted in compliance with the order, including 8095 clips from Amazon, approximately 4000-5000 from Flipkart, 21 from Meesho and one each from Snapdeal and Shopclues.

This regulatory action serves as a crucial step toward preserving consumer safety and curbing the sale of items that compromise vital safety mechanisms. It sends a strong message to sellers who attempt to exploit unsuspecting consumers by selling potentially dangerous products.

Moving forward, it is imperative for online retailers to exercise due diligence in scrutinising products listed on their platforms to prevent the circulation of potentially harmful or non-compliant items.

As e-commerce continues to thrive, it becomes increasingly important to strike a balance between convenience and consumer welfare.
