Come 1st January 2021, toll plaza payment will be made cashless across the nation and all lanes will be converted to FASTag lanes.
A pre-paid, touch-and-go card will be introduced by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to be used instead of cash at hybrid lanes at all toll plazas.
NHAI officials state that this move will prevent congestion at toll plazas in the country.
People without a FASTag can now opt for the pre-paid cards which will be available at the point-of-sales (PoS) at the toll plazas.
Two PoS will be set up at each national highway toll plaza for people to purchase and recharge the cards. Further, the pre-paid card can also be recharged through net banking as well.
In addition, pre-paid card users will not be charged double the toll fare in case they enter the FASTag lane, unlike the current scenario where people who make toll plaza payment by cash are charged excessively if they enter the dedicated lane without a tag.
Even people whose FASTag has been blacklisted can use the pre-paid cards and pay their toll fare without any hassle.
The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) has floated a tender to invite bids so that the system gets introduced at the earliest.
