BYD Shark revealed, design looks inspired by Ford F-150 pickup truck
BYD, the Chinese automaker known for its electric vehicles, has made a significant foray into the pickup truck market with the introduction of its latest offering, the BYD Shark, in Mexico. This marks BYD’s first venture into the pickup segment, adding to its existing ‘Ocean Series’ lineup, which includes cars and SUVs like the Seal sedan, Seal U SUV and Dolphin hatchback.
Competing in Mexico’s pickup truck market, the BYD Shark enters a competitive arena, facing off against established contenders such as the Isuzu D-Max, Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux. What sets the Shark apart is its plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with front- and rear-mounted electric motors, promising both power and efficiency.
In terms of design, the BYD Shark presents a blend of conventional pickup truck styling with distinctive touches. Sporting a prominent BYD emblem up front, along with C-shaped LED daytime running lights. The front profile looks inspired from Ford F-150.
Inside the cabin, you get dual digital displays, offering a 12.8-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch instrumentation display. It gets a 12-inch head-up display, wireless charger, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and even a karaoke function.
Under the hood, the Shark gets a hybrid powertrain delivering a combined output of 435 HP. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/hr is 5.7 seconds. For off-road capabilities, it comes with dual-mode off-road system. The plug-in hybrid setup enables an electric-only range of 100 km. It also has fast charging capabilities.
BYD is unlikely to launch the Shark pickup truck in India. BYD is instead focusing on introducing a range of electric vehicles tailored to the Indian market. It currently offers the Atto 3, e6 MPV and the recently launched Seal sedan.
