BYD launches the Sealion 7 electric SUV in India, offering a range of up to 482 km

BYD Sealion 7 launched in India with a starting price of Rs. 48.9 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base Premium variant and going up to Rs. 54.9 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the top-end Performance trim, the electric SUV marks BYD’s fourth offering in India. The model was first showcased at Auto Expo 2025, where bookings also commenced. Deliveries for the first batch of 70 units are set to begin on March 7.

Design and Exterior

The Sealion 7 features a sleek crossover-like silhouette, further accentuated by a sloping roofline and BYD’s Ocean-X design language, similar to the Seal electric sedan. X-shaped elements are integrated into the front bumper, headlamps, and tail lamps, lending it a distinctive visual identity. The SUV rides on 19-inch alloy wheels in the Premium variant, while the Performance trim is equipped with larger 20-inch wheels. Customers can choose from four color options: Atlantis Grey, Aurora White, Cosmos Black and Shark Grey.

Interior and Features

Inside, the Sealion 7 shares design cues with the Seal sedan, including a dashboard layout and steering wheel that exude a premium feel. A highlight of the cabin is the 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, which controls most of the SUV’s functionalities. Other notable features include ventilated front seats, a connected car suite, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, a floating digital instrument cluster, a panoramic glass roof with a sunshade, a 50W wireless phone charger, a heads-up display, a powered tailgate and a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function. Both the Premium and Performance trims come equipped with the same set of features.

Practicality is another strong suit of the Sealion 7. The SUV offers a 520-litre boot, which expands to 1789 litres with the rear seats folded. Additionally, a 58-litre front trunk (frunk) adds to its utility.

Safety and Technology

BYD has prioritised safety with the Sealion 7, equipping it with 11 airbags, a 360-degree camera and an array of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These include blind spot detection, forward collision warning, intelligent cruise control, automatic emergency braking and more.

Battery, Performance and Range

Both variants of the Sealion 7 are powered by an 82.56kWh LFP low-voltage battery pack, though their performance figures differ significantly. The Premium variant features a rear-wheel-drive setup producing 313 HP and 380 Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in 6.7 seconds. It offers a WLTP-certified range of 482 km.

For those seeking more performance, the AWD-equipped Performance variant delivers a substantial 530 HP and 690 Nm of torque, cutting down the 0-100 km/hr sprint time to just 4.5 seconds. However, its range drops slightly to 456 km.

Market Positioning and Competitors

Given its body style and pricing, the BYD Sealion 7 primarily competes with the Volvo C40 Recharge. Additionally, models like the Kia EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 5 also fall within its price bracket, offering potential alternatives for buyers in this segment.

With its blend of performance, technology and safety features, the Sealion 7 strengthens BYD’s electric vehicle lineup in India, catering to customers looking for a premium, high-performance electric SUV.
