BYD India considering new range of vehicles for India including plug-in hybrids

BYD India is considering the introduction of plug-in hybrid vehicles in response to increasing demand in the Indian market. Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles (EPV) Business at BYD India, has hinted that the company is evaluating the potential for launching PHEVs in the country within the next two years. This move is part of BYD’s broader strategy to tap into the growing interest in hybrid vehicles.

Chauhan revealed that BYD India is currently conducting a feasibility study for introducing PHEVs to the market. He explained that the company has been closely monitoring consumer interest in hybrid vehicles over the past 18 months. If this momentum continues, BYD could introduce affordable plug-in hybrid models from its global portfolio to Indian consumers.

He emphasises that plug-in hybrid is their strength and they are constantly evaluating the option. The company wants to study for another 6-8 months. If the momentum for hybrids continues, they will offer a plug-in hybrid model at an affordable price.

The shift towards hybrids in India is part of a broader trend in the automotive industry. In addition to its fully electric offerings, BYD has seen significant sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles globally, with around 1.7 million PHEVs sold out of the brand’s total sales of 3 million units last year.

BYD India’s current lineup consists exclusively of electric vehicles, including the Atto 3 SUV and Seal sedan. The company recently discontinued its e6 MPV, which will be replaced by the eMax 7 on 8th October, 2024. Additionally, BYD is considering the launch of an all-new electric SUV, priced competitively within the Rs. 20 lakh range, aimed at competing with the upcoming Creta EV.

BYD’s move comes as other players in the Indian market also shift their focus towards hybrid and electric models. Shanghai Automotive’s Indian subsidiary, JSW MG Motor India, recently announced plans to introduce locally produced plug-in hybrids and strong hybrids. Parth Jindal, Director of JSW MG Motor India, stated that the company aims to sell 1 million electrified vehicles by the end of the decade, positioning itself as a leader in the new energy vehicle sector in India.

With the growing acceptance of hybrid technology in India, both BYD and its competitors are positioning themselves to cater to the country’s evolving automotive landscape, where consumers are increasingly looking for more eco-friendly and cost-effective driving options.
