BMW X7 India Launch In 2018, Mercedes GLS Beware

The BMW X7 will be launched in India in 2018, to sit alongside the 7-Series.

The big bold boxy kidney grille is likely to be toned down on the production X7

BMW has confirmed that its flagship SUV, the X7 will be launched in India towards the end of 2018. The German carmaker had unveiled the X7 concept recently at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The range-topper SUV will be a seven-seater and will rival the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the Range Rover. BMW is likely to get the X7 to India as a full import.

So, how different is the X7 from the current flagship X5? Drastically! Starting with the looks, the X7 is a class apart. The big bold boxy signature BMW kidney grille (finished in chrome) is what will catch your attention immediately flanked by the headlights with the corona rings on either side. The grille has been inspired by BMWs of the 1950s like the 502.

There is less drama with regards to the car’s design, there are clean flowing lines and the sheer length and width of the car are its special attraction. The air-vents behind the front wheel arch and in the rear bumper, brushed aluminium window surrounds, wraparound tail-lights and the unique door handles are what sets the X7 apart from other BMWs. After all, it’s a flagship SUV for BMW.

The 23-inch wheels you see here won’t likely make it to the production car and will be downsized by two/three inches. To add to the premium feel, BMW will also give the X7, a black and white version of the traditional roundel or logo with its full name – Bayerische Motoren Werke written across. The production X7’s dimensions will be similar to the concept car and what that means is the X7 will measure 5020 mm in length, 2020 mm in width and will come with a wheelbase of 3010 mm.

Internationally, the BMW X7 will be a six-seater but India’s X7 will seat seven. Interiors of the X7 concept will get you the feeling that you’ve landed in a different galaxy altogether. Being a flagship BMW SUV, expect top-quality materials and the cabin to be laden with the latest and most expensive technology. However, the concept X7 gets a new attractive-looking steering wheel, fully digital instrument panel and a redesigned centre console.

Coming to powertrains, expect BMW to plonk the ones from the 7-Series sedan into the X7. The 30d motor is likely to be the mainstay model while the 40d is also expected. However, unlike other X cars from BMW, the X7 will also get a hybrid version with an all-electric range of 100 kms.

The hybrid uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor and an electric motor along with a larger capacity battery. The xDrive 50i variant is also likely to make it which comes powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 motor. Prices for the X7 are expected to start at around Rs. 1.3 crores and go all the way up to Rs. 2 crores for the hybrid model.
