BMW R20 concept is a Big Boxer Roadster
BMW Motorrad has recently unveiled the R20 concept, a bold motorcycle that showcases a unique blend of modern technical elements and classic roadster design. Highlight of the R20 is its air-cooled 2000cc Boxer engine, an evolution from the R18’s 1802cc motor. Despite the increased cubic capacity, BMW has yet to release specific performance figures for this new engine. For comparison, the R18 generates 91 HP at 4750 RPM and 157 Nm of torque at 3000 RPM.
The BMW R20 concept stands out with its distinctive design elements. It features an aluminium tank finished in a vibrant shade that BMW describes as “hotter than pink.” This eye-catching colour extends to various parts of the bike, including the cylinder head covers, air intake funnels and belt cover, all finished in polished anodised aluminium. The paralever strut, brake callipers and footrests are finished in a contrasting gunmetal colour, enhancing the bike’s overall aesthetic.
One of the most notable design features is a 3D-printed aluminium ring that integrates the daytime running lights, creating a floating effect. The seat is upholstered in quilted black alcantara and leather, incorporating a compact rear section with an integrated LED tail light.
BMW claims to have completely redeveloped the chassis for the R20, utilising a double-loop main frame made from chrome-molybdenum steel tubes. The rear wheel, featuring a black disc-like design, measures 17 inches and is paired with a 200/55 size rear tyre. The front wheel is a 17-inch spoke design with a 120/70 size tyre.
According to Alexander Buckan, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad, “The R20 concept is a bold interpretation of the BMW Motorrad DNA. It combines modern technical elements with a classic roadster design. Its oversized proportions and minimalistic aesthetic make it an unmistakable character.”
Additional key design elements include an exposed driveshaft, ISR brake callipers, twin exhausts, a fully adjustable Öhlins suspension setup and a swingarm made of chrome-molybdenum steel, resulting in a wheelbase of 1550 mm.
As of now, BMW has not disclosed whether the R20 concept will transition into production. What do you think about this bike concept? Let us know in the comments section.
