BMW Motorrad has revealed the R 18 Classic, the second member of its latest cruiser model series.
Based on the R 18, the “Classic” features (in addition) a large windscreen, passenger seat, saddle bags, auxiliary LED lights and a 16-inch front wheel (instead of 19 inches).
Created as a nostalgic touring bike, the BMW R 18 Classic brings the iconic style of bygone times to the present day.
The double-loop frame, tear-drop tank, open-running universal shaft and the double-lined paintwork (ex works option) are reminiscent of the legendary R5 dating back to 1936.
In keeping with the BMW Motorrad philosophy, the tourer features a laid-back seating position, while the footrests are mid-mounted, just behind the cylinder heads.
Of course, the centrepiece of the new R 18 Classic is the 1802cc “Big Boxer” that makes 91 HP at 4750 rpm and 158 Nm of torque at 3000 RPM.
Suspension-wise, the bike has 49 mm telescopic forks upfront (120 mm travel) and a central shock with adjustable preload (90 mm travel) at the rear, 16-inch wire-spoked wheels at both ends.
Braking duties are carried over by 300 mm twin discs at the front and a single disc, also 300 mm, at the back. There is ABS as well, much needed to stop the 365 kg bike.
Three standard riding modes – Rain, Roll and Rock – are on offer on the BMW R 18 Classic. The standard trim also includes ASC (Automatic Stability Control) and engine drag torque control (MSR).
Other standard equipment include all-LED lighting, circular instrument with integrated display, keyless ride, and cruise control. As optional extras, there are adaptive turning light, reverse assist and Hill Start Control (HSC) on offer.
The new R 18 will be offered worldwide as an exclusive R 18 Classic First Edition right from launch, with the standard model reserved additionally for certain markets.
The First Edition models have a classic black finish with white double-lined paintwork, numerous chrome surfaces, a seat badge and a “First Edition” chrome clasp on the side covers.
BMW says the bike has been designed to be conversion-friendly. So, owners can change its looks according to their wish. Also, there two different design collections of parts available with the bike alongside plentiful accessories.
