BMW India has showcased an ensemble of power, performance and luxury with the 2014 M6 Gran Coupe at the Auto Expo. The M6 Gran Coupe is based on the regular 6-Series Gran Coupe, which itself is based on the two-door 6-Series (base for the M6). Both the M6 Coupe and Gran Coupe use the same powertrain, however cater to two different segments altogether. Essentially, the M6 Gran Coupe is for those who are looking for power and practicality and the 7-Series is just too boring for their tastes.
On the outset, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe has a grandiose presence. It carries the styling from the 6-Series Gran Coupe forward but gets subtle changes to differentiate from the regular version. If the 6-Series Gran Coupe looked prestigious and classy, the M6 Gran Coupe makes aggressive and intimidating its styling trademarks. The car gets a sporty bumper design with massive air intakes, while the wheel arches are now further pronounced to add to the aggressive look. The M treatment continues all over the car with the carbon-fibre roof, quad-tipped exhausts and the side grilles differentiating it from the regular 6-Series Gran Coupe. The wide and muscular bonnet lines give it a dominating presence hiding the raw power of this beast. The car rides on 265/35 fronts and 295/30 rear Michelin Pilot Super Sport 20-inch tyres.
The interiors on the BMW M6 Gran Coupe are exceptionally pleasing to the eye. The cabin boasts off impeccable use of leather and carbon-fibre. The front seats are a snug fit and will encompass you very well when the G-forces kick in. The low coupe roofline does reduce the headroom at the rear making it difficult for the rear passengers. The Gran Coupe sits lower than the M5 as well, thus making the ingress and the egress a tad bit difficult, but totally worth it. You also get three cameras to aid visibility. Being a full sized sedan, it also gets a usable boot that can carry anything from golf clubs to Louis Vuitton luggage.
Coming to the heart of the M6 Gran Coupe; it is powered by the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine capable of producing 552 BHP of power and 680 Nm of torque that also powers the M5. The engine is mated to a potent 7-speed DCT transmission which sends the power to the rear wheels. 0-100 comes up in just 4.2 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/hr. You can also opt for the M-Driver’s package to improve the performance and handling while increasing the speed limiter. There are two brake options namely the standard set with vented and cross drilled rotors squeezed in between six-piston callipers or the more expensive carbon ceramic brakes for better performance. The suspension has been tuned for a variety of conditions with the help of the M Dynamic Damper Control which can set the ride to the softest or the firmest mode to your liking.
You also get different driving modes which BMW calls Driving Experience Control. You can choose the settings to drive in Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ or independently adjust the setting of the car at the press of a button. The car also offers the memory function in the iDrive system to remember your preferred settings.
The most admirable fact about the M6 Gran Coupe is that it is fast, loud and luxurious while not showing any of it on its skin. Yes it sure does get the M-power upgrade, but it’s not screaming to the world what it’s capable of, and that surely will click with the few elite’s. You can drive to the office and back or go all bonkers on a track day; the car blends in on both turfs. The M6 Gran Coupe will be making its Indian debut soon and will be brought in as a CBU to our shores. The M6 Gran Coupe competes with Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG and the newly launched Audi RS7.
