BMW i3 India launch being evaluated, company focused on bringing more plug-in cars to the country.
BMW is currently studying the market feasibility of bringing the i3 to India as it thinks cars with plug-in technology are indeed a stepping stone towards promoting electric vehicles in the country. Besides, the German automaker is also gearing up to launch the i8 Roadster in the coming months. The convertible version of the i8 was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo earlier this year.
BMW is likely to introduce the range-topping i3s variant in India. This particular variant comes with sporty styling elements like black inlay and accent bar in the front bumper, 20-inch light alloy wheels and a distinctive rear bumper. The vehicle draws power from an electric motor that produces 184 PS (134 kW) of power and 270 Nm of torque. The electric motor is in turn powered by a 33.2 kWh lithium-ion battery that gives a driving range of around 200 kms when fully charged. Talking of charging, the battery can be fully charged in approximately 11 hours using a standard AC charger. However, with the BMW i Wallbox AC fast charger, charging up to 80% is possible in 2 hours and 45 minutes and the time reduces to just 39 minutes if charged via a DC fast charger.
The BMW i3 also comes with an option of a range extender which is powered by a 647cc twin-cylinder petrol engine which produces 38 PS of power and 56 Nm of torque. Considering the poor charging infrastructure in India, the company could very well launch the i3s with the range extender option.
