BMW considering LWB SUVs in India after witnessing success with LWB sedans

In a bid to expand its footprint in India’s luxury vehicle market, BMW is considering the introduction of long-wheelbase SUVs. This move follows the German automaker’s successful foray into the country’s LWB sedan segment, where it currently offers the 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series, all known for their rear passenger comfort. With SUVs making up over 50% of BMW’s sales in India, the brand sees potential in catering to the growing demand for spacious vehicles.

BMW has established a strong presence in India’s LWB sedan market, a niche that prioritizes additional rear-seat legroom – a key consideration for Indian buyers who often spend significant time on the road. The company’s lineup of LWB sedans, tailored for the Indian market, includes the right-hand drive versions of the 3 Series and 5 Series, which are otherwise available in LWB form only in China, albeit in left-hand drive configurations. The exclusive offering has resonated well with Indian customers, positioning BMW as a leader in this segment.

Looking ahead, BMW aims to replicate this success in the SUV segment. Currently, the brand offers several LWB SUV models in China, including the iX1, X1, X3 and X5, all designed to enhance rear passenger space. Jean-Philippe Parain, BMW’s Senior Vice President for Sales Regions Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, highlighted the importance of space for Indian customers, noting, “We understood that long wheelbase is important for the Indian market; because of the time spent on the road, space is a key feature.”

If BMW introduces the LWB versions of its SUVs in India, the X5 could potentially outshine competitors like Mercedes-Benz GLE. The X5 LWB boasts a wheelbase of over 3100 mm, significantly longer than the 2995 mm wheelbase of the GLE currently available in India. This difference could give BMW an edge in a market where rear-seat comfort is highly valued.

The potential launch of LWB SUVs in India would not be BMW’s first foray into an exclusive offering for the market. Mercedes-Benz, another major player in the luxury vehicle segment, also caters to this demand. However, Mercedes-Benz’s Indian portfolio currently includes only the LWB E-Class sedan, which is set to receive a full model upgrade soon.

As BMW considers this strategic expansion, the company is likely evaluating the necessary modifications to the vehicles’ running gear and other components to suit Indian conditions. Should the plan materialise, India could become the second market after China where BMW offers these right-hand drive LWB SUVs, marking a significant step in BMW’s strategy to cater to local market preferences and enhance its competitive edge.
