Even after the re-introduction of Chetak, the automaker will stick to the motorcycle segment.
Baja Auto recently re-introduced the Chetak brand name with an electric scooter, which is about to launch soon with an expected price tag of under Rs. 1.50 lakhs. However, Rajiv Bajaj says they are not back in the scooter segment and the company is not changing its strategy.
The managing director of Bajaj Auto says that they are motorcycle specialists and will stay away from scooters. He says the company has not made the Chetak another IC engine powered scooter which will participate in the volume space. It is a niche electric scooter.
After the introduction of electric Chetak, people believe that Bajaj Auto has changed their strategy but that’s not the case. The Indian automaker has made a choice to prioritise motorcycles, which is more lucrative for them.
Mr. Bajaj says because of the larger volume segment, motorcycles are sold with a higher price and they have a greater image. This is the reason why they decided to focus on motorcycles and stayed away from scooters.
