Bajaj Auto is a well known 2-wheeler manufacturer in the Indian market and is all set to introduce the RE60 quadricycle that is a safer and a practical alternative to the three-wheeler. Recently, Tata Motors Managing Director, Karl Slym questioned the development of the RE60 project and stated that the proposed formation of a quadricycle segment was a step backward, in terms of traffic safety and environmental concern. Bajaj Auto has responded to the comments made by Karl Slym stating that the RE60 is not a low cost car and the manufacturer intends to promote the RE60 as an improvement over three-wheelers and not as a passenger car.
Bajaj Auto spokesperson also commented on the rapidly declining demand for the low cost Tata Nano. The Pune based bike maker believes that the Nano offers nothing but a lower price and the poor strategy is evident in the sales data. A decade ago, Bajaj and TVS together came up with a similar project of a quadricycle to introduce a cheaper car but this time the manufacturer claims the project to be a superior form of a three-wheeler. The Bajaj RE60 is ready to create a new segment altogether, which meets all eligibility criteria for a quadricycle and is developed according to European regulations for such vehicles.
The government had set up a committee for ensuring the feasibility of quadricycles in India and has given a green light approval for creating this class of four-wheelers. The quadricycle vehicle does not come under any of the existing vehicle segments and the government requires forming a new set of rules and regulations for this category. Other manufacturers such as Piaggio, Mahindra and Eicher are also interested in this project and are likely to come up with their products in this category in the near future.
