Electronic Stability Control and Autonomous Emergency Braking will be mandatory in India from 2022.
At the ‘Stop the Crash’ event of Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) announced that ESC and AEB features will be mandatory in Indian cars from 2022. This will be the next step towards automobile safety in India, after the amendment of ABS, airbags and reverse parking sensors from 2019.
Electronic Stability Control is an active safety feature which detects loss of steering control and automatically applies the brake to individual wheels helping the vehicle to be in control. The Autonomous Emergency Braking works on the data from radars and camera technologies. This system automatically applies the brakes of the car when it gets closer to the obstacles ahead.
These mandatory safety features in the Indian cars will make our vehicles at-par with the United States safety standards. In Europe and USA, AEB will be mandatory by the year of 2021 and 2022 respectively. A lot of Indian companies have started equipping their models with ABS and airbags as standard features.
If this action takes place successfully, it will take the safety front of the Indian automobiles to another level. Maintaining the cost while including the safety features will be a major challenge for the automobile companies. With more manufacturers using this AEB system, the price of this technology will surely come down in the coming years.
Recently Global NCAP crash tested the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Renault Lodgy. The Brezza scored a healthy 4-star rating having dual airbags, ABS and ISOFIX seats as standard. While the Lodgy failed the crash test as the car doesn’t come with safety features as standard.
The new safety norms to be implemented from 2022 in India will result in better safety ratings. Cars in India car score full 5-star ratings if ESC and AEB come as standard fitment.
