Audi’s next premium car in India is going to be the RS6 Avant which will be launching on 4th June 2015, catering to a very niche segment.
Station wagons are practical vehicles that act as a very good means for the occasional weekend family getaway, coupled with the usual duties of a family car. But the Indian automotive market has never been attracted towards station wagons. Many manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Fiat, Skoda, etc. have had their short stints with station wagons in India, but, have had to pull away from the segment owing to poor sales. However, the premium luxury station wagon segment is still uncharted territory. Audi is going ahead and will make the first move in the segment by launching the performance oriented RS6 Avant in India on 4th June 2015.
The RS6 is based on the Audi A6, but was launched much later as compared to the first generation A6. The third generation RS6 which launched in 2012, is only available in the Avant or station wagon avatar, unlike the previous generation models which also came in a sedan and wagon versions.
Looking to capture a majority share in the premium car market, Audi is launching one product after another in India. Much like the recently launched RS7 performance vehicle, the RS6 Avant will also act as a niche offering from Audi India and will cater to a few buyers who want a super-fast station wagon. The RS6 Avant is powered by a 4.0-litre TFSI V8 engine that generates an impressive 560 BHP and 700 Nm of torque. Paired to an 8-speed tiptronic transmission, the estate can reach the 100 km/hr mark from standstill in just 3.9 seconds and can hit a top whack of 305 km/hr.
Featuring Audi’s unique matrix LED lighting system as an option, the RS6 Avant is expected to be priced comfortably above the Rs. 1.2 crore mark. Let’s hope this sparks the new beginning of the station wagon segment in India, making Mercedes and BMW to bring similar products to India as well.
