Audi has become the number one luxury car maker in India, overtaking BMW quite quickly. The German automaker has aggressive plans for India and is already on a product offensive. Audi has launched quite a few products this year and plans to bring more products in the near future, which will help them to stay on the top, as its arch German rival Mercedes-Benz prepares a product onslaught. Audi’s next launch in India is the S6 sedan, which is expected to go on sale next month.
Audi has been very clear about its plans. The company feels there is little demand for premium hatchbacks in India. Thus there are no real plans to launch the A3 hatchback anytime soon. Instead Audi will bring in the A3 sedan next year. The company is now considering the launch of the A3 Sportback in the country, offering it as a niche product. This vehicle is expected to hit showrooms in 2015 and will compete with the Mercedes-Benz B-Class. This information comes through a tweet from Audi India’s CEO and MD, Michael Perschke.
The Audi A3 Sportback is a 5-door model which offers quite a bit of boot space. With the seats up, the A3 Sportback has a 380-litre boot which can be expanded to 1220-litres with the rear seats down. The vehicle measure 4310 mm in length, 1780 mm in width and 1425 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2636 mm which should lend it good rear seat space (B-Class has a wheelbase of 2699 mm). Powering the A3 Sportback is a range of engines but we suspect Audi will offer the same motors which do duty in the A4.
