Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, commonly known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), has been inaugurated on 12th January, 2024. This monumental sea bridge, spanning 21.8 km, is set to redefine connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
The Atal Setu connects Sewri to Nhava Sheva, offering a strategic link that not only reduces travel time but also establishes a crucial connection for the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).
It has been constructed with an investment of more than Rs. 17,840 crores. The travel time between the two regions has reduced from 2 hours to 15-20 minutes. The distance has been reduced by 15 km.
Entry of two-wheelers, 3-wheelers, tractors, animal drawn vehicles and other slow moving vehicles will not be allowed on MTHL.
Key Features of Atal Setu:
- Record-Breaking Length: With a total length of 21.8 km, the Atal Setu stands as the longest sea bridge in the country. An impressive 16.5 km of this length stretches over the water.
- Strategic Connectivity: The Atal Setu is poised to play a pivotal role in connecting key areas, serving as a vital link between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. This improved connectivity is expected to boost trade, commerce and tourism between the two regions. It will also reduce travel time between Mumbai to Pune, Goa and souther parts of India.
- Support for Navi Mumbai Infrastructure: The bridge’s proximity to the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) is crucial for the efficient movement of goods and people.
