Aprilia design head hints the possibility of Tuono 457 after the launch of RS 457

In the wake of Aprilia’s recent launch of the RS 457 at India Bike Week 2023, speculation is buzzing about the potential development of a naked derivative, tentatively named the Tuono 457. While nothing has been officially confirmed, Marco Lambri, Piaggio’s head of design hinted at the prospect.

Manufacturers commonly use successful platforms to diversify their offerings and Aprilia has a history of doing just that. The RSV4 and Tuono V4 share a platform, as do the RS 660, Tuono 660 and Tuareg 660. Lambri’s response to the idea of a Tuono 457—“Why not? Why not.” keeps the possibility alive, though it falls short of a concrete confirmation.

The launch price of the RS 457, set at Rs. 4.1 lakhs (ex-showroom), has raised eyebrows, potentially making room for a more affordable Tuono 457 to cater to a broader audience. Aprilia has traditionally positioned Tuono models at a more accessible price point compared to their fully faired counterparts in global markets.

If the Tuono 457 does materialise, it is likely to feature distinct ergonomics compared to the RS, with a flatter handlebar and a pared-down body design. The 457cc parallel-twin engine is expected to carry over with minimal alterations, delivering an estimated power output of around 50 HP. The bike is expected to be manufactured alongside the RS 457 at Aprilia’s Baramati plant in India, potentially positioning the Tuono 457 as a competitive option in the sub-Rs. 4 lakh category.

While the development of the Tuono 457 remains speculative, the intriguing response from Marco Lambri and Aprilia’s track record of platform diversification keep the conversation alive. Enthusiasts will be watching closely to see if the Tuono 457 becomes a reality, offering a potential alternative in the middleweight naked bike segment.
