During the launch of the Vespa Sixties GP, Piaggio revealed that they are planning to launch their much-awaited scooter- the Aprilia SXR 160, somewhere in November.
Aprilia showcased the SXR 160 for the first time during the Auto Expo in February 2020, and it took all scooter enthusiasts by storm.
While the SXR is designed in Italy, Piaggio India CEO Diego Graffi said that the scooter is made specially for India. He also said that the scooter will serve as a blend of comfort, up-to-date technology and usability for Indian road conditions.
Like the Aprilia SR series, the design of the SXR is also sporty. However, the SXR follows the design strategy of maxi-scooters. The long footboard, big headlamp set up, and large seat convey that clearly.
On the tech front, the SXR 160 will feature a digital instrument cluster with smartphone connectivity, dual-LED headlights, disc brake, alloys and a vast variety of accessories. While the design is all-new, the headlamp reminds us of Aprilia’s middle-weight sports bike- the RS 660.
Powering the scooter will be Aprilia’s 154cc BS6-compliant engine. While the power figures are not present as of now, we expect similar sporty and punchy performance as the SR series provided.
There was news that the Italian manufacturer will introduce an SXR 125 as well. But Aprilia has said that their key focus will be the SXR 160 because the 160 is more suitable for the market currently. They added that the SXR 125 might follow later, but there’s no definitive date or schedule as of now.
Lastly, the SXR 160 was going to arrive in September initially, but as usual, the pandemic played the spoilt sport. Now the Piaggio group plans on launching the scooter by November, and we hope they price it well. We expect it to cost around Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 1.3 lakhs (ex-showroom).
