Maruti Suzuki to launch affordable hybrid cars in the near future
Maruti Suzuki Chairman R.C. Bhargava disclosed the ongoing efforts by Suzuki Japan to develop cost-effective strong hybrid technology tailored for the Indian market. This revelation comes amidst a global automotive landscape where many manufacturers are committing to battery electric vehicles, while Maruti Suzuki and its partner Toyota continue to invest in strong hybrid electric vehicles.
Bhargava acknowledged the current high cost of hybrid technology utilised in Toyota’s models, leading to elevated vehicle prices. However, he expressed optimism about Suzuki Japan’s endeavours to introduce strong hybrid tech that would enhance fuel efficiency at a more accessible price point.
“While the cost of technology in Toyota hybrids remains high, Suzuki Japan is actively working on advancing strong hybrid systems to improve fuel economies in smaller cars at a more affordable cost,” Bhargava stated.
Currently, Suzuki primarily offers mild-hybrid systems on its entry-level vehicles in its home market, with strong hybrid systems limited to larger passenger vehicles such as the Solio and Landy. However, the potential efficiency gains with strong hybrid systems are evident, especially for smaller cars, as demonstrated by the Solio achieving significantly higher mileage compared to its petrol variant.
In India, Maruti Suzuki’s strong hybrid offerings are limited to models derived from its collaboration with Toyota, namely the Grand Vitara and the Innova Hycross-based Invicto. However, the accessibility of these vehicles remains a concern, with the most affordable strong hybrid variant priced above Rs. 16 lakhs.
Bhargava highlighted the potential impact of a reduction in GST on hybrid cars, currently set at 43 percent, on boosting demand. While Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari proposed slashing the GST to 12 percent, Bhargava indicated a cautious approach, awaiting developments post-general elections.
Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to unveil its maiden battery electric vehicle, following the EVX concept, expected towards the end of 2024. Prior to this, the company plans to launch the next-generation Swift hatchback and the new Dzire compact sedan.
