The one car better than the four-door S-Class sedan is an S-Class with two-doors, and Mercedes has finally showcased the all new S-Class Coupe to the world. The coupe was first showcased as a concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September last year and the production version retains the silhouette of the design from the concept. The car is scheduled to make its first public appearance at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show on the 6th of March and will replace the current CL-Class.
The S-Class Coupe is an evolution of the characteristics and design philosophy of the four-door sedan however retains an elegance and sportiness unique to itself. The car measures 5027 mm in length, 1899 mm in width and 1411 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2945 mm. Talk about presence! The car sits lower and is wider than its predecessor. The coupe looks more agile and sporty with the low roofline and a bold front facia.
The diamond grille that was first showcased on the A-Class looks perfect adding to the beauty of the car. The side profile gets an imposing stance with the pronounced shoulder line that starts from the front wheel arches, while an added crease on the belt line makes for an imposing look. The rear receives a wide horizontal tail light design with LEDs and is actually very different from the current tail light design featured on other Mercedes cars. The 3-pointed star logo proudly sits in the centre of the boot-lid and also doubles up as a reversing camera.
The interior on the other hand has been carried over from the S-Class saloon but has been tuned to fall in sync with the coupe. The gear shifter is now replaced by a turning dial, which is also used to control the COMAND infotainment system. You also get the innovative Heads-Up Display (HUD) and the touchpad feature which allows the driver to draw characters instead of typing on them. The coupe gets 3-spoke multi-functional flat-bottom steering wheel that looks sporty, and a completely digital instrument display screen.
As an optional feature, the headlights feature 47 Swarovski crystals in which 17 angular crystals create flare-shaped Daytime Running Lights, while the rest 30 round-shaped crystals make up the turn indicator lamps. Whoever said you don’t have to buy your car jewellery, certainly does not work for Mercedes. The optional Air Balance package with fragrancing and ionisation feature will also be offered on the coupe.
The top of the line S500 coupe will be powered by the 4.7-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces a staggering 455 HP of power and 700 Nm of torque. Mercedes will also launch other versions of the coupe, which will feature other engines from the S-Class’ lineup. A hybrid could also be launched later in the car’s life cycle. The vehicle will be available with 18 and 20-inch tyre sizes.
The coupe gets loads of features from the four-door sedan which include PRE-SAFE brake with pedestrian detection, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist and Stop & Go Pilot, BAS PLUS with junction assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive High-beam Assist Plus, Night View Assist Plus and Collision Prevention Assist PLUS. As an optional feature, you also get the Magic Body Control adaptive suspension system that improves occupant comfort.
