Yamaha has just launched an automatic scooter Alpha at the 2014 Auto Expo. The new Alpha is aimed at both men and women. The scooter is powered by a 113cc air-cooled engine which is mated to a continuous variable transmission (CVT). The Yamaha Alpha is tuned to provide good blend of performance and fuel economy, which is claimed to be 62 km/l. The leg reach has been designed by Yamaha engineers in such a way that it is easy for even women to ride the scooter. The storage capacity is also good enough at 21-litres.
The front suspension of the Yamaha Alpha is telescopic and the rear suspension is of upright type. Yamaha believes there is a lot of potential in the scooter market in India and hence they want to focus on introducing new products, improving the sales and after-sales strategies and expand their network throughout the country. The Yamaha Alpha is priced at Rs. 49,518/- (ex-showroom, Delhi), which puts it in direct competition against the segment leading Honda Activa.
The Yamaha Alpha is available in the following colours – black, grey, white, red and magenta. The scooter produces 7.1 PS and 8.1 Nm. The Japanese automaker is aiming to sell 2 lakh units of the Alpha within one year of the launch. Yamaha’s new tagline ‘Revs Your Heart’ was announced last year in India at the launch of the Ray Z. The Alpha is the third offering in the scooter segment and sits above the Ray. The company has named its maiden mascot ‘Zippy’.
