Ford is currently conducting tests of the next generation Figo, which is also known as Ka in the international markets. The hatchback will get prominent changes compared to its predecessor in terms of styling, features and mechanicals. However, it will retain the existing model’s platform, which is derived from the previous generation of the Fiesta. The platform will remain the same but it will be modified by using thin, high-strength steel throughout to keep it light in weight. The upcoming model will grow in dimensions so we can expect more cabin space.
The next generation Ford Figo will be sculpted in the new aggressive design tone that includes the Aston Martin inspired grille seen on the latest offerings. The interiors will have the latest tech like the EcoSport. Engine options are yet to be revealed but the new Figo is expected to feature the 3-cylinder, 1.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine and a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre petrol motor. The Indian market will get a diesel engine option, probably from the Fiesta. Ford has aggressive plans for the Indian market, where the American automaker is aiming for heavy localisation (over 90 percent) for competitive pricing.
Ford India is setting up a new plant in Gujarat and is planning to make India their global compact car production base starting from 2014. Expect the new Figo to be frugal with its lighter weight. The hatchback is expected to be unveiled in the international market early next year, with a starting price of £8500 (Rs. 8.43 lakhs). Ford is also likely to introduce a compact sedan version of the next generation Figo in India, which will replace the Classic, competing with the likes of the Maruti Swift DZire and Honda Amaze.
