Couple of months ago, Mitsubishi India was on a spree of discontinuing cars including the Lancer Evo X, Cedia and Outlander because of single digit sales or no sales at all. Currently their Indian lineup consists of the Pajero Sport and Montero SUVs only. The Japanese automaker is now focusing only on utility vehicles in India and is planning to re-introduce the Mitsubishi Outlander early next year. The carmaker will launch the third generation Outlander in India and we can expect Mitsubishi to unveil the new Outlander at the 2014 Auto Expo in February.

The outgoing Mitsubishi Outlander was offered with a petrol engine option only, which received underwhelming response by the Indian market for obvious reasons. While the Pajero Sport is meant to be a pure off-roader, the upcoming Outlander will be launched as a soft roader with an all new design inside out, equipped with a host of convenient and safety features. The design tone looks sleek and neat which boasts of a mature stance compared to the outgoing model. On the inside, the new Outlander gets a driver centric dashboard with beige and black combination that gives a premium touch to the interiors.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander will come in India with a single diesel engine option which is likely to be a 2.2-litre turbo diesel motor that produces 147 BHP of power with 380 Nm of torque, mated to an option of a 6-speed manual and automatic transmission. We doubt if the new Outlander would be enough to lift the fortunes of Mitsubishi India. The carmaker needs to get their strategies right for the Indian market and launch new models frequently in order to get going. It also needs to expand dealerships and improve service.
