The world’s best taxi, Hindustan Motors’ Ambassador (on the basis of toughness) is confirmed to be launched in a chopped version under the sub 4-metre category. The company officials recently announced that their iconic car, Ambassador, will be introduced in a new shorter avatar by the end of this year while another model with all the bells and whistles and modern styling will be launched by March. Last month, we reported that the company is planning to launch the Ambassador with a Bharat Stage IV compliant diesel engine.
Sales of diesel powered Ambassador was discontinued in 14 metropolitan cities since 2011 which has been a setback for the product’s sales. The new ‘Compact Ambassador’ will be underpinned by the same platform as the regular Ambassador. The tailored version bedrocks will be similar to the current model. The new Ambassador will feature a distinctively revised body shell and a more modern sharp design is expected. Basic features like power windows, power steering and air conditioning don’t need any introduction as the company is already offering them on the current models.
However the company is focusing on young buyers and to persuade them to buy the generation old brand, HM will have to add class leading features with upmarket quality. The company presently offers 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre diesel powerplants, while the 1.8-litre petrol engine is also offered along with alternative fuels, LPG and CNG options. Although, power figures of the Ambassador is enough to dust other taxies on the Top Gear track but it will be hard for the company to lure the family car buyer with similar specs.
Hindustan Motors needs to extensively revise the mechanical bits of the Ambassador to make its presence felt in the mid-size segment. Interestingly, the company is working with a new strategy of taking feedback of their existing customers to re-develop products, that makes the possibility of a potent vehicle from Hindustan Motors stable this time. The Indian automaker will launch the shorter Amby by 2013-end and being a sub 4-metre car, it is likely to reach outlets with a starting price tag of under Rs. 6 lakhs.
