The Volkswagen Touareg was earlier speculated to get a midlife refresh in 2015. However, a test mule of the Touareg was recently spotted by CarPix and they managed to click a few pictures of the camouflaged model on the roads in the Alps in Europe. As seen in the images, the body shell will be similar to the current rugged and beefy design and doesn’t wear any new lines and curves. The front and rear of the Touareg is cloaked in the images which is a sign of the subtle and modern changes over the current model.
Apparently, the new Volkswagen Touareg will feature a new driver assistance system and an updated touch screen infotainment on the dash. Some other comfort tweaks are likely to be seen on the new model. In international markets, Volkswagen offers several engine options on the Touareg, ranging from a 3.0-litre to 4.2-litre petrol engines and same spec range for the diesel too.
However, the Indian market gets only a 3.0-litre, V6 TDI diesel engine that churns out 245 BHP, which is anticipated to get a boost of 15 BHP more on the new model. Additionally, a new 4-cylinder engine is expected to replace the baseline 3.0-litre V6 TDI powerplant to improve fuel efficiency and emission levels simultaneously.
The Touareg was first introduced in 2002 and developed in collaboration between Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche. Volkswagen also powered the Touareg with a behemoth 6.0-litre W12 petrol engine between 2005 and 2010. The W12 model was limited to the production of 500 units and the company sold over 300 units in Saudi Arabia only. The car is based on the PL71 platform which also underpins the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7. Volkswagen might give the Touareg a revised platform which is expected to make its debut next year.
