General Motors has halted sales of the Chevrolet Tavera BS-III, diesel Sail sedan and diesel Sail U-VA in India. The Tavera has an issue with emission performance, while the diesel powered Sail twins suffer from quality issues, autoX reports. The company has also temporarily suspended production of these models which are manuactured at the company’s Halol and Talegaon facility. However the Tavera BS-IV and petrol powered Sail siblings are unaffected by these problems.
Although details of the problems with the Sail sedan and Sail U-VA are not yet disclosed but it’s likely to be an issue with the 1.3-litre diesel engine. This is a cause of worry for the American automaker as its recently launched Enjoy MPV also uses the same powerplant. General Motors will have to take corrective actions immediately, by recalling already sold vehicles which are very likely to face issues. The company clarifies the issue is not a safety related one.
General Motors has been doing decently well in the Indian market after launching three vehicles from its Chinese partner SAIC’s stable. The Sail U-VA might not have set the sales chart on fire, with only 824 units sold last month, but the Sail sedan is off to a decent start, selling 2027 units in the month of May. The Enjoy MPV managed 2173 units last month, which is simply fantastic for this segment where competition is quite intense. The company sold 1475 units of the Tavera and managed to boost overall volumes compared to the month and year before.
