Get your magnifying glasses out now. BMW has unveiled the 2014 5-Series facelift, which has changes all around, only visible through a magnifying glass. With competition always intensifying in the executive luxury sedan segment, BMW has come up with a mild facelift of the F10 5-Series, which helps them to keep things fresh. BMW has given the 5-Series more features, along with both interior and exterior changes, which although minimal, should keep the car in contention till the next generation model arrives in 2016.
On the exterior front, the new 5-Series gets a new front bumper with chrome surrounds for the fog lights, added contour lines on the kidney grille, extra crease in the front and rear apron, new alloy wheels, new body colours, new highlights for the tail lights and chrome strip on the rear bumper. Some of the added exterior highlights are very similar to the ones which debuted on the new 7-Series, like the chrome around the front fog lights and rear bumper.
The cabin now features a touch sensitive pad and the display gets a chrome surround. The cup holders are now slightly bigger and the outside rear view mirrors get turn indicators. The updated 5-Series also gets LED foglights and Xenon headlights as standard on all the variants. New Adaptive LED headlights are offered as an option. The vehicle also gets handsfree boot release which opens the trunk by sensing your foot below the bumper.
BMW has also tweaked all engines to meet stricter emission norms. The engines are now more efficient thanks to coasting mode which disengages the powertrain to save on fuel. The drag co-efficient of the 520d has been improved to 0.25, making it more slippier than before. A new 518d base model has been added which churns out 143 BHP of power and returns 22.23 km/l. The top-end model uses a V8 diesel motor producing 450 BHP of power. However in India, we will continue to get the same set of engines, when the facelifted model arrives later this year.
