BMW unveiled the 7-Series facelift with minor upgrades last year. The German luxury carmaker has been caught recently testing the next generation 7-Series. The heavily camouflaged prototype was spotted testing with temporary head lights as well as tail lights. The proportions of the doors on the next generation 7-Series prototype seems to be changed with short doors upfront and long doors at the rear, compared to the existing model.
The next generation luxury oriented BMW 7-Series has been coded internally as G11. The next generation BMW 7-Series is not expected to be introduced before 2015 as the vehicle is in its early stages of testing. Till now, most sports cars use carbon fibre, however the next generation BMW 7-Series will get carbon fibre which will lead to immense weight saving. The 2015 BMW 7-Series will use a mix of aluminum, steel and carbon fibre in its construction, something similar to what the electric vehicles, the i3 and i8 will use.
While the upcoming BMW 7-Series is undergoing initial tests, Mercedes-Benz is ready to announce the introduction of the next generation S-Class later this year. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is one of the strongest rivals for the BMW 7-Series. The 7-Series will also rival the Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ, both of which are highly competitive products, offering a whole lot of luxury and performance to the high end buyer.
Currently, the Indian car market awaits the launch of the facelifted BMW 7-Series, which is expected in the first half of this year. The India bound 7-Series facelift will be powered by a 3.0-litre, in-line 6-cylinder diesel unit, which is capable of churning out 258 BHP of maximum power output and 560 Nm of peak torque, mated to an all-new 8-speed steptronic automatic transmission. Currently, the BMW 7-Series in India comes with a starting price of Rs. 86.40 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi). BMW will locally assemble the 7-Series facelift at its plant in Chennai.
