The North American based automaker Chevrolet has unveiled its Sonic B-Spec concept race car. The Chevrolet Sonic B-Spec Concept has been made in order to preview a competition kit developed for racers who want to update their regular Sonic in to a race car. According to the car maker, the kit will feature an adjustable front stabilizer bar, a suspension system, some tweaks to the chassis, an inlet air restrictor, a carbon fiber racing seat, a five-point safety harness, a roll cage, a fire extinguisher, a center catch net, window safety net, quick-release steering wheel and more.
General Motors’ U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, Jim Campbell said that the Chevrolet Sonic B-Spec concept demonstrates the car’s capabilities in the increasingly popular B-Spec subcompact classes in several racing series. Sonic’s great balance of power and responsive handling make it a natural on the track and a formidable competitor. The production intended kit for the Chevrolet Sonic also gets a Luxor Blue paintjob with Monaco Blue graphics and 15×7-inch wheels wrapped in racing tires. The standard 1.8-litre engine has been fitted with an air restrictor mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
The regular Chevrolet Sonic is available in four-door sedan or five-door hatchback versions. It is powered by a 1.8-litre inline-four producing 135 HP of power and 169 Nm of torque and a 1.4-litre turbo inline-four producing 138 HP of power and 201 Nm of torque. The 1.8-litre engine has a timing belt and the 1.4-litre turbo engine uses a timing chain to drive the camshafts. The 1.8-litre is mated to a standard five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, while the 1.4-litre turbo is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.
The Sonic B-Spec with the kit is expected to begin its sales in the first quarter of 2013 through Chevrolet Performance retailers. As Chevrolet didn’t introduce the regular version of Sonic in India, we don’t expect the Sonic B-Spec to enter the Indian market anytime in the foreseeable future.
