Thieves can lay their hands on anything and everything on earth. Having stated that, four-wheelers are no exceptions. The Mumbai police, in a recent press briefing, mentioned that around 1,540 four-wheelers were stolen in Mumbai in the year 2011. Well, that might be a small number when compared to the number of four-wheelers that ply on the Mumbai roads on a daily basis. But, a loss is a loss for the owner. What comes as a surprise here is that the car thieves have their own taste for the cars.
Among the 1,540 cars stolen, the hot favorite for the thieves was the Mahindra Scorpio. The number stood at a mighty 133 units. However, the trend here is a negative one as in the year 2010, a total of 148 Scorpios were stolen. Still, the Mahindra products have always been the target. Mahindra Bolero too had made its mark among the list with 106 units being stolen. Perhaps, the inclination had changed towards the Chevrolet Tavera as in 2010, a mere 67 of them were stolen whereas the year 2011 saw a good 106 Taveras stolen. Hyundai Santro too stood at the same number.
The next one is the Toyota Qualis with a total of 52 units being stolen in the year 2011, which is less by 7 units the previous year. Tata Indica too has made it to the list with a total of 67 units stolen as compared to 61 stolen in 2010. Honda city also seems to be a good choice for the thieves with 37 units stolen. Coming to the extinct species, Maruti Esteem and Maruti 800, which are no longer in production, saw a demand with 58 and 62 units being stolen respectively. Apart from the personal vehicles, even the taxi cabs were on the minds of the thieves with 61 units stolen in 2011.
