Honda has officially revealed all the details (except pricing) and a huge range of pictures of the ninth generation Accord. The new Accord will go on sale in the USA later this month, while an Indian entry seems unlikely in the near future. Honda feels there is no diesel engine which suits the Indian market and the volumes are too low to develop one for the same. The Honda Accord might be discontinued in the Indian market altogether, with the focus shifting to small cars.
The 2013 Honda Accord is offered in sedan, Couple, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid versions. The regular Accord is the volume model and is powered by a 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder, petrol engine. This new motor gets Honda’s Earth Dreams technology and produces 185 BHP of power and 240 Nm of torque. There is a 3.5-litre V6 engine on offer as well, which produces 278 BHP of power and 342 Nm of torque. These engines are mated to a CVT gearbox, while the smaller 4-pot petrol motor is also available with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Honda Accord with a plug-in hybrid motor uses a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine which produces 137 BHP of power. It is aided by a 124 kW electric motor which has a 6.7 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. This takes the total power output to 196 BHP. All petrol engines use VTEC technology. Honda will offer the Accord with a 1.6-litre diesel engine in Europe. The same engine is already doing duty in the new Civic and produces 120 BHP of power and 300 Nm of torque. The new Accord with the diesel heart is just the need for the hour for Honda India. Honda sold 34 units of the Accord last month, which is more than the Hyundai Sonata’s 19 units.
